The Crown Season 1 Episode 1 “Wolferton Splash” :- Watch The Crown Season 1 Episode 1 “Wolferton Splash” on Youtube on Fire, It doesn’t matter whether any of it is true or not (and much of it probably isn’t); series creator Peter Morgan’s great skill lies in depicting events that might be true, allowing himself dramatic licence without wandering into the realms of outright fantasy. Alongside Tony Blair, Queen Elizabeth II has been his other lifelong obsession – time well spent, on this evidence. As Francis Ford Coppola knew well, there are worse ways to start an epic saga than with a wedding. The setting (Ely Cathedral doubling as Westminster Abbey) for Elizabeth and Philip’s 1947 marriage is a stunner, and merely the first example of the quite startling attention to detail in everything from costumes and sets to its painstaking depictions of royal protocol. Every penny of the reported £100m budget is on show. That the coupling was one of love is in no doubt – Matt Smith and Claire Foy share a touching, easy chemistry that makes the longevity of the union easy to understand, and renders the couple not just sympathetic but human. John Lithgow’s blustering Churchill makes an equally telling entrance, stage-managing his own arrival at the wedding while Anthony Eden (Jeremy Northam, smooth and calculating) bides his time to make his move – the shifting sands of British politics are set to play an important role over the nine years covered by this series. What is there left to learn about the Windsors, one of the most scrutinised families on the planet? I approached Netflix’s lavishly appointed new series.
